Simplicity of form, subtlety of proportion and the use of plain, good quality materials were fundamental to his designs. He also wanted to develop a style suited to English traditions and conditions. Designs which he felt were successful were frequently repeated  sometimes with small amendments. He delighted in finding elegant solutions to design problems.

He used a number of makers to carry out his designs including Thomas Elsley for metalwork, F C Coote and Peter Waals for furniture.
