Ernest Gimson was mainly a designer. He ran a number of workshops in Sapperton in the 1900s with teams of staff to make his designs. He started a furniture workshop in 1901 with Ernest Barnsley, taking it over himself in 1905. In 1903 he started a blacksmith’s shop. He used various clerks of works to be on site for his building projects, such as the architect Detmar Blow. All his embroidery designs were made by his family members. He did make two things himself: chair and plaster. He learnt both those crafts in the early 1890s, and practised both when he first moved to Gloucestershire. He continued making plaster throughout his life, but in 1904 he handed over his chair making business to Edward Gardiner.

The Wilson holds furniture, chairs, metalwork, plaster and embroideries by Ernest Gimson.
