This depicts a Dutch horse fair. A man astride a white horse dominates the centre of the picture; he is conversing with a man in a red cape, perhaps about the price of the horse, while around them the bustle of the fair continues. Wouverman often included a white horse in his paintings as a sort of ‘trademark’, but his interest, as can be seen in this painting, was as much in tonality and play of light as subject matter.
